When I started RED Podcast, I thought to myself, "I've got years in radio and I do a lot of public speaking -- I don't need to edit this." It wasn't because I was being lazy as much as it was an effort to get episodes out as easily as possible.

Unfortunately, upon listening to myself, I realized I wasn't as smooth on the mic as I thought. Within a couple of weeks, I was editing everything.

Published episodes of Build A Big Podcast use about 60% of the raw tape I record. Everything else either doesn't fit like I want it to or is me stumbling over words, trying to find the right ones.

This is typical. The "smooth" hosts you hear on podcasts usually aren't that smooth without editing. Even great radio jocks, many of whom talk in short segments on their radio shows, aren't as great when they have to talk for an extended period of time.

In this episode, I talk more about editing and tips on how to make editing yourself a habit. I also share a related letter from Jonathan Bloom of Weekly Awesome about how editing has helped his podcast.
